The Context Inversion Protocol: An Edge-First Profile for Persistent Human Context, with a Local Custody and Provenance Prototype
Prologue
The Sovereign OS Project is an independent research initiative founded by Robert Potter. It publishes the Context Inversion Protocol, a proposed edge-first profile for persistent human context, and Sovereign OS Control Plane 1.6.0, a public MIT-licensed local custody and provenance prototype. The control plane is not the protocol. CIP would sit in front of that plane; it is not yet shipped.
In 1980, the personal computer was famously categorized as a "bicycle for the mind." This was not merely a comment on computational efficiency; it was a profound declaration of digital sovereignty. Prior to the PC revolution, a "computer" was a room-sized leviathan locked within an institution. The user was a supplicant, begging for fractional timeshares via dumb terminals. The personal computer decentralized that power, placing the engine directly on the desk of the individual.
Over the last decade, we have quietly orchestrated a systemic regression. As data evolved into "Big Data" and deterministic logic was eclipsed by centralized frontier artificial intelligence, the architectural gravity shifted entirely back to the mainframe. We increasingly relegate the most advanced edge processors ever built to the role of thin clients, routing our most intimate relational logic back to multi-tenant corporate server farms. We have rebuilt the 1970s topology, packaged it in milled aluminum, and willingly surrendered the bicycle to the cloud.
The project proposes a second liberation of personal computing. The target architecture would demote the cloud from central authority to a replaceable utility. The local edge machine would not be a terminal connecting to a corporate brain, but the authoritative store for an individual's digital life. Sovereign OS Control Plane 1.6.0 is published as that store: captured sources, deterministic evidence, and operator-accepted knowledge, kept as ordinary local files.
The Context Inversion Protocol remains the proposed gate in front of that store. Models and agents would be routed to narrowly authorized context at the edge rather than extracting the store to the cloud. Until that gate exists, the published plane is custody and provenance, not a completed CIP runtime and not an HCP-MCP stack.
